De Hebreeuwse Bijbel gebruikt “nieuwe maan” (חֹדֶשׁ chodesh) zowel voor de letterlijke nieuwe maand als voor de feestelijke offers.
Hier zijn de belangrijkste verwijzingen:

• Numbers 10:10 – Trumpets are blown on days of gladness, feasts, and new moons.
• Numbers 28:11–15 – Prescriptions for offerings on the new moon.
• 1 Samuel 20:5, 18, 24 – Saul and David observe a new moon feast.
• 2 Kings 4:23 – The Shunammite woman’s husband asks why she is going to Elisha: “It is neither new moon nor Sabbath.”
• 1 Chronicles 23:31 – Sacrifices on Sabbaths, new moons, and appointed feasts.
• 2 Chronicles 2:4; 8:13; 31:3 – Offerings on Sabbaths, new moons, and festivals.
• Ezra 3:5 – Burnt offerings of the new moons.
• Nehemiah 10:33 – Obligations for new moon offerings.
• Psalm 81:3 – “Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.”
• Isaiah 1:13–14 – God rejects empty rituals of new moon feasts.
• Isaiah 66:23 – All flesh will worship from one new moon to another.
• Ezekiel 45:17; 46:1, 3, 6 – Sacrifices on Sabbaths and new moons.
• Hosea 2:11 – God will end Israel’s celebrations of Sabbaths and new moons.
• Amos 8:5 – Merchants impatient for the new moon and Sabbath to pass.
• Colossians 2:16 – Paul says not to let anyone judge you regarding Sabbaths, new moons, or feasts.

De Thora gebiedt dit feest rechtstreeks, maar het wordt in de Schrift nooit Rosj Hasjana genoemd. In plaats daarvan is het een dag van trompetgeschal (teruah).

• Leviticus 23:23–25 – On the first day of the seventh month, a memorial of blowing trumpets (zikaron teruah), a holy convocation.
• Numbers 29:1–6 – On the first day of the seventh month, a day of trumpet blasts (yom teruah), with specific sacrifices.

Hoewel het niet direct “Feest van de Trompetten/ Bazuinenfeest” wordt genoemd, zijn er veel passages over trompetstoten die op een symbolische manier met elkaar verbonden zijn:

• Numbers 10:1–10 – Silver trumpets used to summon, set out, and for feasts/new moons.
• Joshua 6:4–20 – Trumpets blown at Jericho.
• Psalm 47:5 – “God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.”
• Psalm 98:6 – With trumpets and the sound of the horn, shout joyfully.
• Joel 2:1, 15 – Blow the trumpet in Zion for alarm and assembly.
• Zechariah 9:14 – The Lord will blow the trumpet.

• Matthew 24:31 “And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”
• Matthew 6:2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do…” (metaphorical).

• 1 Corinthians 14:8 “For if the trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?”
• 1 Corinthians 15:52 “… in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.”
• 1 Thessalonians 4:16 “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.”

• Hebrews 12:19 (recalling Mount Sinai, cf. Exodus 19) “… and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them.”

• Revelation 1:10 “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.”
• Revelation 4:1 “After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, ‘Come up here…’”
• Revelation 8:2, 6 “Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them… Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.”
• Revelation 8:7–9:14 (the seven trumpet blasts)

1. e: hail, fire, blood (8:7).
2. e: burning mountain into the sea (8:8).
3. e: star called Wormwood falls (8:10).
4. e: sun, moon, stars struck (8:12).
5. e: abyss opened, locusts (9:1).
6. e: four angels at Euphrates released (9:13–14).
7. e: Revelation 10:7 “But in the days of the seventh angel, when he is about to blow his trumpet, the mystery of God would be fulfilled…”

• Revelation 11:15 “Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ…’”

In the NT, the shofar/trumpet is associated with:

• God’s voice (like Sinai, Revelation 1, 4).
• The end-time resurrection (1 Cor 15:52; 1 Thess 4:16).
• The gathering of the elect (Matt 24:31).
• The seven trumpets of judgment (Revelation 8–11).
• Symbolic warnings (1 Cor 14:8; Matt 6:2).
